P is for Pear

This short video shows George's painting process from start to finish.
He uses the grisaille technique of starting with a grey,
monochromatic underpainting, and then adding thin layers of color.

The painting shown above is called,
P is for Pear, oil/panel, 10" x 8", by George A. Gonzalez,
and is available for purchase through our Etsy shop at:

Duck Redux

When spontaneity wins over a well thought out plan...

When I started this painting, I painted it exactly as I saw it in my head.  I didn't do any sketches or color references, I just started painting it as I saw it in my mind.  When I thought I was finished, I did not like what I saw ("before" picture), so I removed it from the easel and worked on a couple of sketches.  I played around with the colors a little more, and added some new details.  The "after" picture is what you see now.  If the painting is still sitting around in the studio two weeks from now, you never know, I might make more changes, but for now I am happy.  Hope you enjoy!

How to Paint a Strawberry by George A. Gonzalez

Strawberry Step-By-Step:

Step 1:  A very quick underpainting using Raw Umber & White.

Step 2:  Starting to block in the small details within the strawberry. Blocking in the color to the background and table.

Step 3:  Started blocking in the color for the strawberry using the colors Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, plus black and white.

Step 4:  Step four is basically glazing in a layer of color to the strawberry, background & table.  This step is repeated several times until satisfied with color.

Step 5:  Start to work in the highlights and reflective lighting in order to create the dimples on the strawberry.

Step 6:  I repeat the same method I did for step five, and I start to brighten the highlights a bit more.  I glaze a layer of dark red to enhance the shadow.  Also, I start the first layer of color on the seeds.  This step is repeated several times in order to get the color to the level of completion.  Lastly, I finish up with the details, which would include highlighting the seeds and the leaves, and applying another layer of color on the background and table.

Step-by-Step Marble, by George A. Gonzalez

This is a step-by-step demonstration of my approach to painting, and it is my introduction into the blog-o-sphere. Please be patient with me, as I learn the process, from painting to demonstration to posting. This is all new to me (well, not the painting part). - George

Step 1: Underpainting. I used Ultramarine Blue, Raw Umber, & White

Step 2:  I use the same color scheme for step 2.  I also start the designs in the marble, and add color to the table.

Step 3:  Another layer of color to the background and the marble is added.  The stages in which I work the marble are going to be to apply what I see as the designs in the back, and then start the ones in the middle, and work my way towards the front designs of the marble.

Step 4:  Adding another layer of color to the background and table.  Also, before starting the designs, I glaze a darker layer of color inside the marble, enhance the middle designs, and begin the process of the next layer on the designs.

Step 5:  I add another layer of color to background, table, and marble.  I begin the color for the front designs of the marble.

Step 6:  I finish off the background and the table.  Reinforce all the lights and shadows within the marble and the designs.  Enhance the details.  Lastly, I add reflective lighting and finish the highlights.

All step-by-step demo paintings are available for purchase at $150 each, on our Etsy site!
